Dr. Adamany's Statement of Purpose

One way of experiencing this truth is by living in the physical and intellectual past while simultaneously being in the actual present. Renaissance Florence, with one of the richest cultural and political pasts, was thus chosen as the second location of Fleming College when it re-opened in the Fall of 1972. Fleming students were thus offered the experience of knowing the extreme differences and acknowledged
inter-dependencies between two ages separated by several centuries. Within Florence, the Renaissance and the contemporary are separate in time and unlike one another in various ways, but are held in the same large frame and are parts of the same view, distinct but inseparable.

Florence, with its rich legacy, offers to the sensibilities a satisfaction achieved by few other cities in the western world. The beauty of created forms in this Renaissance city originates from a temper and aesthetic quite different from that of today's world; yet our century cannot be understood or read properly without knowing the source from which we evolve toward our own identity, whatever it is or is to be.

The hope and intention of Fleming College Florence, in the view of Dean Richard J. Adamany, was to expose students intellectually and physically to the past-present, so that each one may experience the shock of dichotomy and ultimately resolve the apparent differences into a single perception.
