Mary Crist Fleming

From 1956 until her passing on January 27, 2009, Mrs. Mary Crist Fleming was dedicated to and involved in the international education of young Americans in Europe. Born September 10, 1910, Mrs. Fleming was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Miller Crist, founders and directors of the Mary Lyon School in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Fleming attended Radcliffe College where she studied French language and literature. She was the Assistant Director of Mary Lyon from 1933 to 1943, when due to the war its buildings were taken over by the United States Navy. In 1944 she established Frog Hollow Country Day School in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, which she conducted until 1955.

In the fall of 1956 Mrs. Fleming founded the American School in Switzerland as an experiment in international education designed to give American students strong preparation for American colleges, with the additional dimension of exposure to cultures and training in languages other than their own. The school still stands as one of the finest American schools abroad. Mrs. Fleming also founded Le Chateau
des Enfants, an educational summer program for children of many nations that continues to this day, and the American Repertory Theatre in Europe, a summer theatre company that performed for many years with young American actors in the great theatres of southern and western Europe. Read more >
